Emilie Mayer – Faust Overture Giovanni Bottesini – Double Bass Concerto no. 2 Joseph Haydn – Symphony no. 104 Emilie Mayer’s Faust Overture opens the concert with dark Romantic intensity. Inspired by the legendary tale of temptation and inner conflict, Mayer crafts a vivid orchestral narrative full of restless energy, bold contrasts, and striking thematic clarity. Her music sets the stage with a sense of urgency and emotional depth. Giovanni Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 shifts the spotlight to the instrument rarely placed at the front of the stage. Bottesini—himself a legendary virtuoso—writes with dazzling agility, lyrical warmth, and operatic flair. The concerto reveals the double bass as both a singing, expressive voice and a vehicle for breathtaking technical brilliance. The programme concludes with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, the final symphony he composed and a triumphant culmination of his London period. Its noble slow introduction, lively folk-infused themes, and radiant finale showcase Haydn at his most inventive and joyful, bringing the concert to a spirited and uplifting close. Together, these works trace a journey from Romantic drama to virtuosic display and finally to Classical mastery—three contrasting sound worlds united in one evening. Codruț Ioan Lăzărescu is a Romanian double bassist who began his musical journey in an unexpected moment: during his first piano lesson, he noticed a double bass in the corner of the room, tried it, and immediately fell in love with its depth and resonance. This moment set the course for his life in music. He began his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts Tiberiu Brediceanu, followed by the Tudor Ciortea Music High School, before completing his bachelor’s degree at Transilvania University of Brașov. He later earned his master’s degree at the Malmö Academy of Music, further shaping his artistic voice and technical refinement. As a performer, Codruț has performed with the Brașov Philharmonic, Brașov Opera, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, and numerous ensembles and amateur orchestras in Copenhagen. During his bachelor’s studies, he toured with the university folk ensemble, helping build cultural and academic connections between institutions across the world. Eirik Haukaas Ødegaard is a Norwegian conductor living in Copenhagen. He is educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, where he had his debut and graduation concert with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra in spring 2020. He has worked as a conductor and orchestrator in contemporary music and chamber opera through collaborations with Athelas Sinfonietta, Operaakademiet and Operaen i Midten, and is also active in Copenhagen’s amateur music scene, where he is the permanent conductor of the Plenum Symphony Orchestra.
