Beskrivelse
Our Ukrainian Soul choir was created to support the Goldshmidtmusikakademi music school in April 2022, immediately after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Our choir is mainly composed of women and children who came to Denmark from different parts of Ukraine, fleeing the war. We gather every Saturday for rehearsals to support each other, as well as to preserve and develop our native culture and traditions. The program of our Christmas concert is dominated by Ukrainian Christmas songs - carols, schedrivka, as well as popular Ukrainian folk songs in arrangements by famous Ukrainian classical composers. Since ancient times, there has been a tradition in Ukraine, mainly among young people, to gather in groups for Christmas and go from house to house, collecting money and goodies. It was a team in which everyone played their role - the one who collected sausage, kalachi and varenyky - traditional Christmas dishes - was called Mikhonoshey, that is, the one who carries the bag. The one who carries the Star was called Zvizdar. There was also an Ataman - the one who led the team and led the entire team around the village or city. The carolers came to every yard and sang Christmas songs, wishing the owners good health and prosperity. It was believed that they brought good news and good luck for the whole year, and inviting them to your home was considered an honor. And vice versa - to chase away the carolers was considered a stupid, bad sign, so they were met in every yard and generously treated. Where did this custom come from? Most scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries came to the conclusion that the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ was superimposed on the ancient pagan celebration of the turning of the Sun to the east, that is, the holiday of the winter solstice, the holiday of Kolyada, the ancient sun god, that's why the songs were called carols and carols. Among them are traditional ones, which glorify the birth of Christ and tell about the gospel events. These are songs that are mainly heard in the church. There are other carols, non-church, so-called secular, in which pre-Christian mythological and Christian images, motifs and plots are combined and intertwined, such as the Tree of Life, the sun, the moon, stars, paradise, the Virgin Mary, saints and other images and forces of nature, which were worshiped by our ancient ancestors before and after the arrival of Christianity in Slavic and Eastern European lands.
